Socio Economic Impact of Biomass Power Plants

bullet

Macro Level Dynamics

  • 120 billion kwh/year (from 20,000 MW capacity), through efficient utilization of surplus Agri Residues/Animal waste.

  • 75 million MT of Agri Residues can be used (along with > 145 million MT of Mill Residues, eg. Bagasse/Husk/DOC) as Power Plant fuel without adversely impacting current social practises.

  • 1200 million MT of animal waste can be used with higher thermal efficiency without impacting current social practises/benefits.

  • Potential for further 20,000 MW from cultivation of energy crops in wastelands (say 10% of 58 million hectares) & alternate (short cycle) crops in arable lands (say 5% of 141 million hectares)

bullet

Rural Impact

  • 150 direct jobs created per MW of Installed Capacity in Biomass Supply Chain and Plant O&M.

  • Indirect Rural Jobs Creation → 60 to 200% of Direct Jobs → through assured availability of Electricity & increased (sustainable) consumption.

  • Contributes to Women empowerment → through creating job opportunities → through eliminating traditional tasks (firewood/drinking water collection).

bullet

Urban Impact

  • Reduction in labour migration from rural to urban areas.

  • Improved financial health of SEB's...resulting in improved quality of service.

  • Gradual phasing out of "cross subsidies"...resulting in lower tariffs.
