INDIA AGRICULTURE
OUTPUT
(characterised
by low farm yields – through sub-optimal farming of grains)

> 40% of land is under “1 season” mono
cropping & offers potential for “short cycle” forage crops
India’s
current fodder consumption (green + dry) is around 1
billion MT. With improved species of forage crops, the
output can be increased to 2 billion MT…meeting needs of
Animal feed as well as Bio-energy (Biogas, Bio-Ethanol). |

INDIA - HORTICULTURAL OUTPUT (2005-06)

Source : Statistical outline of India
2007-08 published by Tata Services Limited
Horticultural products demand will increase
with economic development ….as well as provide higher farm
incomes (if supported by cold storages).
Biogas Plants with agri residues & manure
inputs have by-product of assured Quality Organic fertiliser
& energy for cold storages, key needs of Indian farmer. |
|
|
|
Cold Chain for increasing Horticulture
activity
India uses 6.4 mill ha to grow 113.5 mill MT
of Vegetables (30 % that of China) & 122 mill ha to grow
210-230 mill MT of grain.
China’s vegetable output is 330 kg per
capita > twice the world average. |
|
|
-
Farmers tend to cultivate
grains (even with sub optimal returns) as they are not
perishable.
-
Food Processing/ Preservation
infrastructure would (a) stimulate non grain farming (b)
enhance farmers income (c) meet nutrition needs of the
community (d) open up significant opportunities for
exports
-
CHP schemes, firing biomass,
provide the energy component, which is a key deterrent for
establishment of "Cold Chain".
-
Organic fertiliser is,
generally, well accepted in horticulture sector.
